New Year: Rest and Reset
Happy New Year! Here’s to 2022!
At this point, you’ve probably been immersed in “Make this year the best one yet!” and “New Year, New You!” messaging. But…what does that even mean? Seriously? We’re ALL supposed to have a new personality, body, mindset, etc., just because it’s the new year? I don’t buy it.
Clean Slate of Contentment
Don’t get me wrong. I love a clean slate. A reset. Even a reinvention. But I simply can’t get on board with the rhetoric that you have to change yourself to be happy. Why can’t you simply lean into who you are? What’s wrong with being happy, content, and grateful? Be happy with what you have. Where you are in life. With the current level of “hustle” and success. Why are we constantly being told to push harder? To need more?
Celebrating Your Introversion
Of course, if there’s something you want to change, don’t let me stop you! I’d love to cheer you on. And if the clean slate of a New Year helps you get motivated, that’s great! In fact, we should absolutely connect and discuss those big goals and moves to be sure they align with your sensitive, introverted nature. However, I do not think this reinvention is mandatory for everyone simply because the calendar turned over. A reinvention takes time. Deliberate action. Steady support. The trap I fear you're going to get into with the whole "new year, new you" thing is rejecting your introversion. Trying to change yourself in order to fit into what you think the world needs you to be. And, if you've been following along with me, you know that's not how I think we need to move through the world!
Happy Introverted New Year: Rest and Reset
As a sensitive, introverted woman, I would prefer to think of a new year as a time to rest and reset. Realign. To get quiet and create the space needed to gear up for what is to come. To reflect on what has gone well with gratitude. Then, consider what to keep and what to adjust. These moves can be big or small. Tiny, deliberate adjustments in your day to feel more fulfilled. Not sure where to start?
Here are some of the questions for sensitive introverts that I recommend considering for productivity and peace:
When do you feel energized?
What gives you peace?
Are you more productive in the morning? Evening?
Does your schedule support your strengths?
Have you been building in the breaks and space you need?
Do you need to discuss some structural changes to your schedule with your supervisor or spouse?
